Smells pretty full on on the tin and while smoking. Latakia heaven. A lot has already been said about it and everything that was said in favor of it is true. It's complex because latakia in itself is complex, and you can taste this fine leaf without any bitterness from less than premium leaf or obstruction from too many other flavors. Unlike Billy Budd, where cigar leaves are blended, Pirate Kake is always a delicious blend, both before and after meals. I left the lid off for 2 hours and smokes fine now. I like it, but not sure if I'll buy more. Not much subtlety here folks, so do not come expecting a complex blend. I'm not talking of an even split, nowhere near, but they do lighten the flavoura smidgen! I love it! Final thoughts: if you get bored with all the medium strength english blends, and want something a little stronger tasting then pick some of this up and throw it in your rotation for the nights when you feel you just need something extra. Without question, the different sized chunks of tobacco, with different blends of leaf, is at the root of the many different sub-flavors that manifest during the bowl. Great work C and D. With the description of a 75% Latakia blend, I expected this tobacco to be nothing but the dark leaf and put off ordering it for a long time. Bought a ton of this 2 years ago and after the first bowl immediately turned around and bought a pound. Will save this for chilly, rainy nights. I actually had to read up on this blend to find out its contents. What I do like also is that with the cake form, there is far more tobacco there in that cake than you'd think, once prepared you need much less than you originally thought. I also pickup some oriental mustiness but unlike most English blends, this has zero balance the oriental is an afterthought that you pickup on the exhale but not when the smoke is in your piehole. About mid bowl it seemed to mellow out and I did get some nice sweet notes. Pease balkans I smoke like abingdon, kensington, caravan, and so on. This blend will definitely make you question what you like to smoke and thats a great thing. Taste was consistent. I can definitely enjoy a full english here and there. Pirate Kake is indeed jam packed with this delightful Latakia, and it's apparent when you rub out some of this lovely cake. The crumble cake is easy to pack, the smell is strong smoky. This would be good broken up and mixed with an overly tangy red virginia. After just shy of 4 years in the cellar the blend becomes very sweet, round, and displays a number of notes not originally apparent. Might not have the best flavour in the world by itself, but it is a very cool burning leaf. Initially very smoky, somewhat sweet, very smooth, but ultimately uninteresting. Few smokers will see PK as an all-day or even every-day smoke but it is what it is and if you want a latakia fix then this is nice to have on hand. This is by far the most ham-handed blend I've ever tried. Smoke it slow! Definitely a blen d I refuse to ever run out of. Having said that, this tobacco is in no way an every-day smoke as it just doesn't have enough character to contemplate on. This is not a complex smoke. While it does lack depth, the appeal of the hea vy lat is enough for lat heads. The smoke is never hot, so no issue with tongue bite even if you puff like an train getting it lit. PK dominates the weak tasting 965 but 965 does add quite a bit of oriental and nicotine which makes the combination more interesting than the components.
